I serve as Chair of the Anaheim Parks and Recreation Commission. During my service on the commission, Anaheim has opened new recreation facilities, expanded community center funding, and built and improved City parks. Active in the community, I have chaired the West Anaheim community barbecue and the Christmas tree lighting event. I funded and distributed flags for West Anaheim residents for the Fourth of July. My efforts to fight for playgrounds for West Anaheim children led to my appointment to the Parks and Recreation Commission in 2016.
My wife and I bought our home in West Anaheim 25 years ago. From my days as an Eagle Scout to my community volunteerism to my career in public service and my work on the Anaheim Parks and Recreation Commission, I have lived the values I learned from my working-class parents about helping others and giving back to the community.
1. Enhance public safety in Anaheim. I will fight to ensure that Anaheim police officers and firefighters have the resources they need to protect our neighborhoods, parks, and roads. We must ensure that Anaheim remains a desirable place for police officers and firefighters to work in order to continue to retain our existing personnel and attract experienced personnel. I would also like to allocate dedicated law enforcement officers regularly patrolling our parks. Regular patrols would serve to reduce crime that takes place in the parks, assist in the reduction of homelessness, and restore the parks to a place where the community feels safe and welcome to enjoy the valuable open space that Anaheim is proud to provide.
2. Retain existing businesses and attract new businesses to Beach Boulevard, West Anaheim, and citywide. Promoting economic growth supports the increase of jobs, which in turn, generates consumer income that can be infused back into the economy. Economic growth is critical for the long-term success of all communities, especially in West Anaheim. Bringing new business to Beach Boulevard will help revitalize that area as a place people want to live, work, shop, and dine. It is critical to identify innovative ways to enhance partnerships with private business to foster community development that supports economic activity that provides jobs for our community and a diversified stream of tax revenue that the City can use to facilitate critical infrastructure maintenance needs and provide vital community safety and law enforcement services.
3. Reduce homelessness in Anaheim. We must provide solutions that work to comprehensively provide mental health, housing, and vocational training and job placement opportunities for the homeless in order to address this significant concern for the City of Anaheim, Orange County, and California. To accomplish those objectives locally, I believe that the development of meaningful partnerships with health care, housing, and job placement organizations will be vital in our fight to rectify the problem of homelessness in Anaheim.
4. Improve street and traffic safety in District 1 and citywide. Street takeovers and street races are a serious problem, and I will work closely with both the Police Chief and the Public Works Director to find ways to combat these issues using both law enforcement and engineering efforts to reduce these street takeovers and races. Additionally, three of the top five most dangerous intersections in the City of Anaheim are located in District 1, and I believe this matter could be addressed through the commissioning of a comprehensive traffic study of these intersections to develop recommendations and solutions for how to improve traffic flow and overall motorist and pedestrian safety at these sites.
I had been heavily involved with the West Anaheim Neighborhood Development (WAND) Council working with residents of District 1 on a wide variety of community service and outreach projects. I have served as the chair of WAND’s annual community barbeque event and the Christmas tree lighting event. I funded and distributed flags for the Fourth of July. My activism pushing for playgrounds for West Anaheim’s children led to my appointment to the Anaheim Parks and Recreation Commission, where I am proud to serve the community as Chair, working to provide solutions and recommendations to the City Council as it relates to our parks and open space. I am very proud to have earned the distinction of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, where the training I received helped to lay the foundation upon which my passion for community service is built.
